In the mid-1990s, privatisation and restructuring of the electricity sectors in the US and Australia were implemented to allow free markets the drive investment in generation capacity. A key motivation was the expectation that the system would become more modern and efficient, and that energy prices would be reduced. 20 years on, what have we learnt and what are the implications for the energy systems of the future?
